reminder    MELIOIDOSIS It was worrying to hear of a confirmed case of melioidosis i
n Cairns earlier this year.   This bacterium lives in the soil in most tropical countries around the world and can cause a very nasty and sometimes fatal illness.

It tends Ito rises to the surface of the soil in wet weather, and we are urged to wear shoes and gloves when gardening, cover all cuts and scratches, and shower when we are finished.

NOTE:   The Cairns Garden Club is aware of our responsibility to help in prevention  of  the spread of diseases and pests in plants, particularly electric ants which are on the march again. Please make sure that any plant which you bring to the raffle table or the competition is free from pests and disease.  We strongly recommend an annual inspection of your property for electric ants, which is free and can be arranged by contacting   Gary Morton at DAF  0421 692 251 or phone 13 25 23
