Notice Board

Next Meeting  -  Saturday  19 November 2022

Our Christmas Luncheon will be held at the Balaclava Hotel in the Helmet Restaurant at 12 noon on Saturday 26th  November. The cost is $40 for members and $50 for members’ family and friends.

Marilyn needs to pay the full amount by Monday 21st  November. Could you either pay by bank deposit or with cash on Saturday 19th November at our Christmas Breakup Meeting.

The Christmas Breakup Meeting is our last meeting of the year and we like to play a few Christmassy games and the Christmas Hamper is drawn. We are a bit late this year with the raffle so we would appreciate it if you could bring your donation for the raffle and your raffle tickets back at this meeting. Otherwise Marilyn is taking any donations at her house if you live out that way.

As it is the Christmas breakup everyone is invited to bring a small plate of food along to celebrate. We are also having our Secret Santa and if you would like to be involved just bring along a gift related to gardening to the value of $10. These gifts will given a number and you will receive a different number when you hand in your gift. Secret Santa is instead of our usual plant raffle.

The competition for this meeting is a handmade Christmas Table Decoration.

If you have any special Christmas activity ideas suitable for this meeting can you please let me know.

A reminder    MELIOIDOSIS

It was worrying to hear of a confirmed case of melioidosis in Cairns earlier this year.   This bacterium lives in the soil in most tropical countries around the world and can cause a very nasty and sometimes fatal illness.

It tends Ito rises to the surface of the soil in wet weather, and we are urged to wear shoes and gloves when gardening, cover all cuts and scratches, and shower when we are finished.

Covid-19 protocols will be observed   --
  • The Club will provide hand sanitiser, but if you wish to wear a mask that is your personal decision, please supply your own mask. We will be sanitising all surfaces before the meeting.
  • Bring your folding chairs, but remember that we must observe the social distancing rules leaving  1.5 metre space between us at all times, including at afternoon tea time.  Chairs will need to be well spaced.  The committee will assist with this.
  • The Club will provide afternoon tea for our  members with commercially prepared pre-wrapped biscuits (motel style), if you have specific dietary requirements and need  to bring your own food, DO NOT SHARE.

NOTE:   The Cairns Garden Club is aware of our responsibility to help in prevention  of  the spread of diseases and pests in plants, particularly electric ants which are on the march again. Please make sure that any plant which you bring to the raffle table or the competition is free from pests and disease.  We strongly recommend an annual inspection of your property for electric ants, which is free and can be arranged by contacting   Gary Morton at DAF  0421 692 251 or phone 13 25 23
