About Us

Cairns Garden Club is for anyone interested in gardening.
You don't have to have a garden to join.

Our History

In 1953, small informal groups of people in various suburbs of Cairns joined up to form the Cairns Garden Club. Ernie Stevens' name was mentioned a lot so it's thought he was one of the main figures behind the drive to form a club. Many of these members were keen and competitive and trained as horticultural judges. They ran annual flower shows separate from the Cairns Show.

Much later a large umbrella body was formed as an incorporated body for insurance purposes. This was known as the Far North QLD Horticultural Society but eventually disbanded as clubs had to meet every two months and it became unworkable due to distances having to be travelled.

Cairns Garden Club adopted the constitution of the organisation and became Cairns Garden Club Inc as a properly incorporated body in 1992.
